THE LOCATION REEL
WHERE MIDNIGHT CITY WORKS BEST
BEST-FIT SCENES
City skylines, lit streets and reflections shot after dark or at blue hour, with enough exposure to retain detail in the buildings.
THE COLOUR CHANGE
Adds a darker, higher-contrast urban feel around existing signs and streetlights. It does not create neon or recover detail from black footage.
ADJUST THE STRENGTH
Correct exposure before choosing among the five grades. Apply the .cube look after your basic correction, then ease back the blend if signs clip or shadow detail disappears; compare frames with bright lights and unlit streets.
These creative looks are for normal/standard-colour footage. Convert flat or log footage to Rec.709 first, then make basic exposure and white-balance corrections before applying a look. Read the full grading guide.
QUESTIONS ABOUT MIDNIGHT CITY
Do I need neon lights in the original shot?
No, but the look works best when the scene already has artificial light or reflections to shape.
Can it rescue an underexposed night flight?
No. Lift and balance usable shadow detail before applying the look; a LUT cannot restore detail that was never recorded.
